Highcliffe Castle stands as an important example of late 18th/early 19th century architecture build in the Romantic and Picturesque style.  This castle is also considered of international significance as a large amount of the medieval masonary used in its construction was shipped from France. It is this Norman and Renaissance carved stone that gives the castle its aged look along with its Gothic revival features and ancient stained glass.

The castle was built between 1831 and 1836 as a result of one Lord Stuart de Rothesay, a distinguished diplomat, who had loved the site overlooking Christchurch Bay since childhood.
